Map and Bar Chart

There are three primary ways to view the Social Capital Index data. The radio buttons allow you to select your preferred view. On any view, you can use the dropdown to select your preferred index or use the slider to switch between different years.

  • Geographic Map: This is the default view and shows a choropleth map reflecting the Social Capital index data. Green represents low social capital values compared to the rest of the nation while blue represents high social capital values. Hover over the the map for a tool tip to show the name of the state and the exact value of the index.
  • Bar Chart: This organizes the states into a bar chart arranged from lowest to highest.
  • Circle or Square View: These views turn the states into standard shapes, either a square or a circle. Such a view better allows for comparison between states than the standard geographic view. While a geographic view allows easy identification of states, it inherently gives more weight to larger geographies. A circle or square view puts all the states on the same footing -- Rhode Island is just as visible as Texas.
